Information

Members of the Compass Club gather each week at several different locations throughout the Toledo, Ohio area. They meet not only to enjoy meals together, but to share opinions and hear about new ideas in business, travel, health, education, and religion.

This unique non-profit organization, the only one of its kind, might be considered a post-graduate course, but it’s not a stuffy classroom. Anyone attending one of the meetings of this club will soon be aware that the “students” are mentally alert retirees. They have a keen interest in the topic under discussion, as evidenced by the spontaneous questions and lively discussions following the speaker’s presentation. Members of the club believe that age is no barrier to learning. The Compass Club motto sums up the club’s attitude:

Who seeketh not direction is already lost.

History

The Compass Club had its beginnings back in 1951 when three prominent local businessmen, Jack Carson, Stanley Curtis, and William F. Webb, met at lunchtime in Downtown Toledo to discuss religious and spiritual topics. Their intent was shown in the motto which they adopted, “He who seeketh not direction, is already lost.” They later enlarged upon the idea by inviting guest speakers to address the group. Several months later a second group was started, and by the end of 1954 seven groups were meeting. Today the club has a membership of about 400 and still invites participation by people of all walks of life and beliefs.

The original founders would be surprised at the growth and changes in the organization. From its all male beginnings, the club is now composed of many women and couples. Members can be seen arriving as early as possible to meet with their friends and get ready for the day’s “nuggets of knowledge.” Travel slides and films have stimulated the “travel bug.” Many members return with their pictures from worldwide trips, which they then present as a program. From time to time, day trips are arranged where members can enjoy an outing as well as have an opportunity to become better acquainted.
